Are We Old?
as shannon and i drove up to the cottage i looked at her and asked "when did it become fun to hang out with parents?" not even just our parents. we have taken to hanging out with any parents that are available.
this last weekend we managed to hit up four different cottages, a record in my books. we started off spending the night at ted and dorothy's cottage, where we hung out with shannon's grandparents and old law school friends of ted's. we relaxed by the lake and filled the day with alcohol and
naps. over dinner ted and michael regaled us with tales of their debaucherous youth while andrew and marta adjusted their hearing aids to catch glimpses of the conversation. as we were discussing how we all lie to our doctors when they ask us how much we drink marta looked confused. as a way to summarize the conversation dorothy leaned over the table, and yelled as concisely as possible, "WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH WE DRINK." they just smiled and pretended they knew what was going on.we drove down the lake to visit jackson, his friends, and his dad and dora after dessert. i think the parents there were the drunkest and definitely provided us with loads of entertainment. one of jackson's friends was also called sarah and dora abruptly decided that we were the 'sarah sluts.' not one to take away the fun i neglected to mention how un-slutty i actually am. i thought it might break her heart.
we all trekked over to another cottage for a bit of a jam session and more beer (not for shannon mind you, she was driving). it was pretty cool out and given that no-one actually knew any words to the songs i wasn't having a massive amount of fun. shannon, jackson and i ended up going back to his place and hanging out for another hour, which was awesome.
we drove up to my cottage the next day, making a minor detour to see an advertised historical plaque. it sucked in terms of what it represented but did not, in any way, take away my love of historical plaques.

at the cottage we just napped and lazed about until my parents got back from massachusetts. a couple of bottles of wine later shannon and i were basically interviewing marilyn and david about the secrets of a good relationship. and what actually constitutes a lie at the beginning of a relationship. for example, if one party expresses interest in the other, and the other party says nothing, then leaves the country to visit another girl but isn't into it, is that a lie? there was a difference of opinion on that one.
at the end of the evening my mom just handed us an O magazine and let us learn the ways of love from that. the next day the group of us took turns reading advice from doctor phil. i don't think my dad loved the assigned reading but played along with the girls!
shannon and i jumped in the lake on monday morning because it is probably going to be our last chance this season. its actually starting to get pretty cold at night but the weather was great the whole weekend. we had to bus it back to toronto but we traded ipods and tuned out for most of it. all in all the weekend was exactly what i wanted. i chilled out, read loads and caught up on my sleep. and i got to hang out with loads of parents!!!
