Finally, a Proper Update

i'm trying to figure out what to write but i just ate a massive bowl of chicken soup with kreplach and my stomach is so full of liquid that my brain is not functioning at full capacity! and i love that i so often blame my stupidity on food, both the abundance and lack of, depending on the circumstances.

anyway, i had a great extended weekend in kingston. my mom and eight other women from the community had their bat mitzvahs on saturday night and my grandmother, aunt and uncle came down for the event. some of you may be wondering why a woman in her mid-fifties would be having a bat mitzvah and i can assure you that it was a somewhat unusual situation. the reality is that bat mitzvahs are a relatively new phenomenon and that majority of older women would not have had the opportunity to participate in the ceremony when they were twelve.

it was apparent that the women had worked exceedingly hard to put the whole thing together and it was quite a meaningful affair. mom was the valedictorian of the bat mitzvah class (she says it was because she missed the class when they picked and this was her punishment, but i don't believe her) and she did a great job. but anyone who knows her knows she loves an audience!

it was awesome to have my grandmother in kingston for the night. its not often that she gets a chance to leave her house, let alone toronto, for any extended period of time and she was as giddy as i've ever seen her. she went back to toronto with my aunt and uncle after brunch but she's called at least twice since to say how proud she is of my mom and all of us.

adele and i did some serious shopping sunday afternoon and i finally got new roots sweatpants. although i was excited to have new sweats i am pretty sure taryn will be even more excited that i will be wearing pants that don't bare my butt to the world!

monday afternoon my family nerded out. and not even the whole family, just the siblings. we planned an outing to the kingston prison museum which was awesome! although there are only five rooms we made the trip last a couple of hours. you might notice in the picture that rebecca appears to be smiling through the hole of an old torture device (she was in a coffin shaped box that would have been used for a hideous solitary confinement punishment) but shortly thereafter the smiling turned into muffled shrieks as michael locked her in! it was funny ... for me.

and the rest of the trip home can be described best with the word (words?) "over-indulgence." two turkey dinners (and a turkey lunch), stuffing, challah, and a load of decadent desserts. if he hadn't already met with unfortunate circumstances dr. atkins would have been pissed. it was a carb bonanza interspersed with, well, more carbs.

but that is what the holidays are all about right? good food, good family and time to reflect on the years past and future.

oh, and for those of you that were wondering about this year's shofar performance i would probably give it a 6 out of 10. the notes were clear but oddly high-pitched, and i am pretty sure i could've honked out a better tekiah gedaliah, but i say that as one of the ladies in the nosebleed section. i'm not even allowed on the bimah to back up my claim!

A Quick Note ...

its been commented on that i haven't written in a while. nay, that i've actually gone backwards in my blogging by erasing a message. and to that person i say that my life fluctuates between tediously boring and exceptionally busy, both aspects being exemplified this past week making writing difficult. and i guess i just felt weird writing about my own boobs. it seemed like a good idea for a few hours and then i turtled.

i'm still in kingston right now, celebrating and repenting. every stereotype about jews and cooking has been fulfilled during my short visit home and i can barely keep my fingers moving as my body struggles to process the vast quantities of food i've consumed. i can't actually write a whole lot right now as i have some visiting to do, but here are some of things you can look forward to in my upcoming posting:

- a lovely, albeit partially geriatric, bat mitzvah
- locking my sister in the box
- the blowing of the shofar and
- new sweatpants!

its been a good weekend and you will hear all about it soon.
